Lines are the most common elements in graphic design. Lines can be modified into different shapes, widths, lengths, and directions. Each kind of line can deliver different messages and moods in design. Here are 7 common types of lines that can be implemented in the design.
1. Thin Lines
Thin lines appear delicate and are easily broken. Thin lines are fragile and are typically employed to underline or highlight phrases or words. The arrangement of the page or borders can be created by combining these delicate lines with other sharp lines.
2. Thick Lines
Strong and bold characteristics are shown in thick lines. These lines are strong and when applied with the right strength and colour, can draw the viewer’s attention in a certain direction.
3. Horizontal Lines
Horizontal lines have a calming effect and convey that peacefulness. These phrases evoke a sense of profundity, serenity, and relaxation. Convey a feeling of tranquillity and leisure. They give a calmness or relaxed feeling to the viewer.
4. Vertical Lines
Vertical lines are thought to be towering and symbolize majesty and spirituality. Vertical lines have higher effectivity than horizontal lines. These lines are upside down; parallel to horizontal lines. These lines convey strength and stiffness. Additionally, it conveys solidity.
5. Diagonal Lines
Slant lines, other than vertical and horizontal ones, are known as diagonals. Horizontal and vertical lines are less dramatic than diagonal lines. Diagonals draw the viewer’s attention in that direction and convey motion and fluidity. These lines are restless and unstable, with an unpredictable energy kind. Diagonal lines depict movement and action.
6. Curved Lines
Fluid movement is expressed by curved lines. Depending on how much they bend, they can be either tranquil or active. They are intriguing to follow and quite easy on the eyes. The viewer can be energized and moved by these lines. These can be straight, wavy, or spiral lines. There is a sense of ease and comfort in these lines. It can therefore be used to create logos.
7. Zigzag Lines
Zigzag lines are a network of intersecting diagonal lines. They spark fervour and vigorous activity. They shift direction swiftly and repeatedly, which conveys bewilderment and anxiety. These lines have a strong sense of energy and mobility. Both action and excitement as well as agitation and worry can be expressed in these lines.
Lines Can Also Work Together!
Lines are also able to work together in some situations, depending on their use in design. 3 conditional situations make lines work together:
- First is intersection, which is a condition in which lines cross each other. The point of intersection is what it’s called, can be found on all intersecting lines, and is where the intersecting lines share a common point.
- Second is perpendicular lines, which is a situation where lines meet at the right angles, for example, is a 90° intersection of two separate lines. These lines always come together at an angle. Two lines are parallel to one another and will never cross if they are perpendicular to the same line.
- The third is parallel lines, which is a situation of lines can’t be intersected.
