Before we get into the discussion of how artificial intelligence threatens the lives of designers debates. First of all, we have to know what AI is. Including how AI works in design.
AI is not the same as robots. People think AI is a robot because it is closely related to modern technology. And it seems that people still think robots are the most advanced technology. That statement is wrong. AI goes beyond what we expect from technological developments. One thing that proves, AI does not have a physical appearance like a robot. AI is much more a program that can learn and decide.
Artificial intelligence is a larger category that includes technologies that can accomplish activities that require human-like intelligence. AI has at least three main functions:
- Reasoning ability: AI could conclude data logically;
- Language processing: AI can talk to humans naturally; and
- Planning: AI can set and achieve goals.
Then, what is worse about that?
The thing to be afraid of those facts about AI is… they are getting smarter! The ability of machine learning to process massive amounts of data and generate complex results is one of its key advantages. Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a significant role as a background processor, crunching data to provide personalized recommendations for our potential to-do lists, movies and advertisements or analyzing online essays to detect plagiarism.
So, will AI eventually replace graphic designers? Not that simple. Let’s examine what AI design tools can and cannot achieve as the ramifications for the design sector.
The Work of AI Design
Like any other technology that has developed, AI still has errors in many ways. For example, in driving implications, AI on auto-pilot cars still have difficulty observing cones or damaged roads. So, it’s good news that AI in the graphic design field is still in its early stages.
Several tools provide a wide range of possibilities and can generate a wide range of design options, such as sample logos. You can create a website or choose a colour scheme with the help of other programs. These programs usually produce a small number of designs that are highly formulaic or have a narrow scope. But text-to-image AI, which generates visuals based on user input, is getting much intelligence and can do much more. This way of work is commonly known as text-to-image.
Text-to-image AI works by processing text promptly from the user. They turn inputted text into a semantic map and add detail to it. It’s known that AI has numerous data it could give an enormous variety of designs based on the text. Of this, we can see the potential of AI to have a crucial role in graphic design.
But worry no more. Since you started to use AI more often, you will see a pattern that shows that AI is just a collectivity of images. It means they have no originality and literal meaning in every design they make.
The brand’s competition, target market, and medium in which the design is present will influence the creative process. Before producing various sketches of the creative process, it will go through the mood and inspiration boards. Then, after selecting the best concepts, they will continue to be revised based on feedback, with illustrations and mockups constantly refined to perfection. As we have seen, AI is very good at making enormous sketches. But there are still many design phases that AI cannot now complete successfully.
Another error that AI has is the feedback that AI works is limited by bias, and because they draw inspiration from existing sources, it’s not always clear who owns the photos. So, it raises questions about image licensing across platforms and markets as concerns about plagiarism.
AI May Be Great But Human Designer Is Still Irreplaceable
The use of AI will be critical to the future of graphic design, and the resources available today can lead to interesting and original approaches to the subject. It can benefit businesses, empower those with creative inclinations but limited drawing skills, and allow artists to take more leisure from their work.
However, human creativity and soft skills such as client management and negotiation cannot be replaced by AI. This view may change as AI tools advance, but for now, human designers are still required to realize the brand’s vision because of their capability in having different perspectives and experiences. AI can be maximized as a wider source of inspiration complementing the limitations that prevent designers from achieving these goals.
